What To Expect At Your First Appointment

Acupuncture Treatment

Most people who are new to acupuncture associate needles with pain. We understand this might one of your concerns and want to provide you with some information that will hopefully allay your fears and encourage you to give it a try.

When you arrive, you’ll meet your practitioner. First, the two of you will sit together and discuss, not only what brought you in, but other symptoms you might be experiencing. Our intake forms are comprehensive because acupuncture treats the whole person. Getting information about you as a person and how your symptoms present will help us arrive at the correct diagnosis. After we complete the intake, we will evaluate your tongue and pulse, and any other relevant diagnostic test in order to make a correct diagnosis.

We understand some people can be a little nervous at first and we will do our best to quell those feelings by going at a pace that is comfortable for you, so please communicate that if we are going too fast. Please keep in mind that our acupuncture needles are very thin, about the width of one hair on your head, most people tell us the insertion of needles is similar to a very slight pinch. We also use guide tubes to facilitate needle insertion, and can provide additional calming therapies such as FSM (Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy), Aromatherapy, or Sound Therapy to ease anxiety and help you relax. After all needles have been inserted, the healing process begins. We will check on you periodically to make sure you are comfortable and give you a bell to ring in case you need us at any point during the treatment.

From here, you will have 20 to 30 minutes to rest deeply, meditate or fall asleep. Most patients are so relaxed they lose track of time. Patients wake up feeling grounded, relaxed and overall balanced!

Naturopathic Physician

Naturopathic physicians are considered both primary care physicians and experts in preventive care. Many people suffer from chronic conditions that never seem to get resolved. Our patient intake form is quite extensive because your body, mind and soul are all related. We want a comprehensive assessment of the major systems in your body so we can get a complete picture of your health concerns and determine the underlying cause (or causes) of your health concerns. During the initial visit, we will review the intake form, your health concerns, your personal health history, family history, medications, allergies, and lifestyle practices such as diet, sleep, exercise, stress management and work, family and other psychosocial factors that impact your health and wellbeing. We will review treatments that have been done in the past, as well as factors that seem to aggravate your situation as well as anything that has helped. After putting this information together, a relevant physical examination will be done. Acute disorders may be addressed on the first visit with in-office treatments such as acupuncture, FSM (frequency specific microcurrent therapy) and diagnostic blood tests will most likely be ordered. Recommendations about diet, healthy lifestyle practices (sleep, stress management, exercise) and nutritional supplements may be given to get you started on the pathway to healing and recovery. All recommendations are made on an individual basis and are designed to help you reach your health care goals with a plan that is sustainable and has lasting and meaningful benefits. This generally takes between an hour and an hour and a half.
